scars of gold

Putting the spotlight on health inequalities through the power of art. With a powerful photography series inspired by Kintsugi capturing the strength found in scars, and a collection of artworks inspired by the stories. Bringing together education, support and advocacy in an innovative way.

2024/2025 Women's Health Inequalities.

About the campaign

The Power of Voice. The Power of Art.
The Purpose of Health.

Dr Liz Murray was a medical doctor for over ten years. After 6 miscarriages, stage 4 Endometriosis causing multiple organ damage and a diagnosis of complex auto inflammatory disease led her to having to step back from a clinical role, Liz saw both sides of the stethoscope.

Liz founded the concept of Scars of Gold - inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi takes broken antiques and ceramics, repairing the cracks with gold to create something new and more beautiful rather than broken and dismissed. Taking this concept and applying it to humans, applying gold to their scars both seen and representative.

Scars of Gold is a campaign utilising photography, art, voice, sound in a revolutionary way to capture people's attention and invoke thought. Combined with medical professional led education and support services, the campaign feeds into our charity's services as well as signposting to other specialist charities and organisations.

“The beauty is not in the scars themselves, or the disease. The fragility of our mortality and cruelty with which our lives becomes dictated by a diagnosis is not something to be glamourised. What is borne as a result of those scars is what is gold and to be shared as rays of hope and strength to others. It is the fierce determination to embrace life to its fullest: finding a deeper and profound joy in the dawn of another day itself. It is this which makes scars of gold".”
