Beyond MSOP

MEDICAL STUDENT OUTREACH PROGRAMME

Working with the 'doctors of tomorrow' to turn patient experiences into valuable education. Taking your feedback to drive patient-centered care.

Through working with patients across all health conditions we are continuously collating feedback about the challenges, barriers and experiences they face across the healthcare system. It is our mission to collate this passive research, as well as actively researching specific areas, to turn this into something constructive.

By working with medical schools across the country we aim to deliver valuable teaching and education, so that the 'doctors of tomorrow' are hearing from patients of today.

Patient voice and journey will hopefully improve the experience of someone following in their footsteps.

part of our higher change mission

Connecting our charity with medical schools across England & Wales to maximise impact and outreach

There are approximately 36 medical schools across England training medical students to become our country's future doctors.

Whilst medical training already includes patient-centered care as part of their curriculum - we want to connect and contribute to their training.

Providing a unique opportunity to bridge healthcare with patient experience and the voluntary sector to reinforce the value and need for compassionate, integrative healthcare. Reinforcing the importance of emotional wellbeing care, the value of the voluntary sector in a patient's journey. Sharing a unique insight directly from patient experience to be part of the training of our future healthcare providors.

OUR VISION

To integrate with all the medical schools across England & Wales, establishing a sustainable programme guided by us, delivered by medical students. Each year providing an educational training session for medical students to share valuable patient-experience-informed training. Connecting with future doctors so they are aware of the value of our work to signpost their patients to us.

OUR MISSION

Begin connections with medical schools and grow our outreach over a 5-year plan until we have a team of MSOP ambassadors within each of the 36 medical schools. Training the MSOPa's and equipping them with the tools to deliver the training days, providing volunteer and teaching experience and opportunities for their portfolio. Collating research actively and passively to ensure that patient voices are heard directly at the source of doctor training.

The MSOP programme

Following approval from the medical school,  we confirm a group of MSOP ambassadors (MSOPa's). Each MSOP volunteer team will work with the charity, deliver the programme and meet the year's objectives, and then receive a certificate and reference for their time and contribution to enhance their portfolio. They then recruit and train the following year's team to continue the work. Programmes like this are commonplace and familiar with medical students, with projects such as the Teddy Bear Hospital. This will be the first time a charity organisation has developed such a programme of this nature.

MSOP Ambassadors

A core team of MSOP ambassadors within 2nd year medical student cohorts will be trained and represent the charity for that year. MSOPa's will be responsible for organisation and delivering the teaching day, with the core themes and objectives outlined by us, informed by the patients we work with.

MSOP Teaching Day

The annual teaching day will cover important themes and objectives:

  • Diagnosis Spiral and Thrive Arc
  • Value of integrative healthcare recognising the role of voluntary organisations in the patient journey
  • Patient-feedback: What patients want doctors to know. Case studies, and key issues commonly faced by patients.

MSOP Fundraising & Awareness

One of the annual traditions of the MSOP programme is for the new MSOPa's to organise and host an exciting and new fundraiser for the charity. They get to pick the theme, working with us to ensure our fundraising regulatory requirements are met for transparency, they provide something unique and exciting, each year trying to surpass the previous year's target.

Each year the MSOP team from each medical school will receive a certificate for their portfolio recognising their teaching and volunteer efforts. This is valuable for their higher training.
